Blue fruits: blueberries are delicious and healthy
Blueberries are low in calories and rich in vitamins and other healthy ingredients. The fruits and extracts that are obtained from it can also help against numerous diseases. Now the delicious berries are in season.

Blueberries are so healthy that many consider them a home alternative to superfoods. The delicious fruits are used among other things for diarrhea. Scientific studies have also shown that an extract from the berries can protect against gingivitis. Researchers also found that the fruit can reduce Alzheimer's effects and lower the risk of heart attack. Now the blueberry is in season.
Differences between cultivated and wild blueberries

The blue fruits prefer to go straight from hand to mouth. But they are also a summer delight in yogurt and sorbet, in muffins and in crepes. Those who have harvested large quantities can process blueberries into compote, juice and jam.
The Swedes love their blueberry soup with small semolina dumplings, some cinnamon and a dash of cream. In salads and in a spicy risotto, the berries are also an eye-catcher.
Blueberries belong to the heather family. There are big differences between the cultivated bilberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) and the wild forest bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), which is also called blueberry.
The wild bilberry can be found all over Europe in sparse coniferous forests, raised bogs and heaths and grows on up to 50 cm high subshrubs. The black-blue berries are pea-sized and very aromatic. Your juice is colored intensely blue due to the blue dye anthocyanin.
Many valuable ingredients
Anthocyanins are phytochemicals. They are among the antioxidants that catch harmful free radicals.
Other valuable ingredients are fiber, fruit acids, manganese, minerals such as magnesium, vitamin E and vitamin C.
Wild blueberries are wildly collected in Eastern Europe, but also in Germany. However, they are rarely found in shops. The fruits from the forest should always be washed well, as they can be contaminated with eggs from the fox tapeworm.
Consume fresh fruit quickly
In the supermarket the consumer gets the cultivated bilberry much more often. It is native to North America and does not come from the native wild blueberry.
The cherry-sized fruits grow on shrubs up to two meters high and have a much sweeter but less intense taste. The flesh is firm and has only a few seeds.
There are hardly any major differences in the minerals and vitamins. However, the anthocyanin is only in the skin, while the juice and pulp are colorless. This has the advantage that you hardly get blue teeth when eating.
Blueberries are still available from local producers until the end of October. Since the fruits are very delicate, they should be transported carefully and consumed quickly. (ad)
