Which toothpaste should I use? Are there any useful tools? Experts have some tips ready to help you get a bright, white smile.

Prevent tooth decay and toothache
Nothing prevents tooth decay, gingivitis and toothache like brushing your teeth regularly. Conscientious oral hygiene cannot begin early enough, because milk teeth need a lot of care. But what is part of proper dental care? Is it better to clean manually or electrically? Which toothpaste is recommended? Do dental care chewing gums bring anything? Experts have some useful tips.

Brush teeth twice a day
As the Vice President of the German Dental Association, Prof. Dietmar Oesterreich, said in a message from the dpa news agency, it is particularly important to brush your teeth twice a day.

Best after breakfast and especially after dinner. According to experts, dental care is much more important in the evening than the next morning.

How long you should brush depends on factors such as the number of teeth in your mouth, your own skill, the brushing technique and the aids used. The optimal cleaning time is usually given as two to five minutes.

As it says in the dpa report, experts until recently assumed that after a meal with acidic or sugar-containing foods, you should wait half an hour before brushing your teeth because the acid removes minerals from the tooth enamel and you brush with them make this process even worse - tooth enamel is cleaned away.

But according to Austria, this recommendation is “critically discussed by the dentists”. "The advantages of cleaning immediately after eating seem to outweigh the possible disadvantages."

Clean the interdental spaces properly
It should be borne in mind that the toothbrush only gets about 70 percent of the dirt deposits - the rest sits between the teeth. Therefore, you should properly clean the interdental spaces at least once a day.

According to Ursula Sellerberg from the Federal Pharmacy Chamber, dental floss is best suited for this. "But you have to be careful not to injure the gums." As alternatives, toothpicks, tooth sticks or interdental brushes are also suitable.

Mouthwashes also clean the interdental spaces. To check your own cleaning success, you can occasionally use a coloring tablet that shows which areas have not been cleaned.

Electric toothbrushes make sense especially in old age
As a rule, dentists recommend brushes with soft to medium-hard, rounded bristles and short heads. These also make it easier to reach the back teeth.

"Electric toothbrushes bring better results," says Austria. This is mainly because the brush heads vibrate or rotate so that your own movements are supported and facilitated.

As Dirk Kropp, managing director of the proDente initiative, explains according to the dpa, electric toothbrushes can make sense, especially when mobility is restricted, for example in old age.

However, children should learn the correct brushing technique with a manual toothbrush before switching to an electric toothbrush later.

Don't apply too much pressure
Too much pressure when brushing is discouraged, as this can damage the enamel. "Scrubbing also causes damage to the gums and neck of the tooth," said Austria. "The tooth structure is chafed away."

The fact that chewing gum can ensure healthy teeth is not because the sugar-free products remove dental plaque, but because it stimulates the flow of saliva.

Saliva has an antibacterial and cleaning effect and ensures that minerals, which are extracted from sugar or acids, for example, and which make the tooth more susceptible to tooth decay, are deposited again in the tooth enamel.
