Between sunburn and vitamin D deficiency: Always soak up the sun moderately
After the long, gloomy and cold months, there is hardly anything better for many people than to finally soak up the sun again. Health experts caution here, however: The risk of cancer increases due to excessive UV exposure. On the other hand, too little sunlight can lead to a vitamin D deficiency. So it depends on the right dose.

Spring sun is often underestimated
After the long winter months, the sunny days of the past few weeks have drawn many people outside. However, sun-seekers should be careful. The strength of the spring sun is slightly underestimated, especially on the first beautiful days of the year, and there is a risk of sunburn. This increases the risk of developing cancer. Every sunburn is added to your own skin account, dermatologists warn. However, you should not avoid the sun completely. Otherwise, this waiver could be associated with health impairments.

The importance of vitamin D has long been underestimated
Professor Jörg Reichrath, dermatologist at the Saarland University Hospital, warns in the current issue of the health magazine "Apotheken Umschau" (5/2017 B) against complete abstinence from the sun.

Because this threatens a lack of vitamin D. The important vitamin is also found in foods such as oily fish, mushrooms and eggs, but the body produces most of it itself - with the help of the sun.

"The importance of vitamin D has long been underestimated," says Reichrath. A deficiency should be avoided in any case. "Even if you don't feel it," says Professor Christian Kasperk, metabolism expert from Heidelberg University Hospital.

Extended sunbathing is not necessary
Most experts advise natural sun rather than taking supplements. Such pills usually do not prevent diseases, as New Zealand scientists found in a study.

You don't have to spend a lot of time in the sun every day to meet your vitamin D needs. It is sufficient to have the hands, face and parts of the arms and legs irradiated. Extensive sunbathing is not necessary.

Sun should only be enjoyed in moderation anyway. As it says in the health magazine, UV light is a cancer trigger of hazard class 1 on a par with smoking and asbestos.

It is better to avoid the sun, especially in the hours before and after peaking. If direct radiation cannot be avoided, sun protection or UV-tight clothing should be used.

Experts recommend that you always base your sun protection on the UV index and not save on creaming. (ad)
