Too little potassium can promote high blood pressure
If too little potassium is supplied to the organism, this can be dangerous. In addition to serious cardiac arrhythmias, blood pressure is also rising, according to the German Stroke Aid Foundation in Gütersloh. If you pay attention to a sufficient potassium level, you lower the risk of having a heart attack or stroke.
Foods with potassium
Potassium foods can lower blood pressure. Potassium, for example, is rich in bananas, wheat germ, soy, avocado, potatoes or spinach. Thanks to the advantageous potassium content, the foods are able to lower blood pressure and thus reduce high blood pressure, as experts from the German Stroke Aid Foundation announced.
People with high blood pressure are at high risk of having a stroke or heart attack. However, if you consume around 3,500 milligrams of potassium with food as an adult, you reduce the risk of a stroke by a good 24 percent. For example, 3500 milligrams of potassium correspond to 100 grams of dried apricots or 100 grams of soybeans. If you suffer from kidney problems, you should speak to your family doctor beforehand, as additional potassium can be harmful.
Potassium is a very important minireal substance. Together with magnesium, it regulates blood pressure and heartbeat. It is also responsible for the excitability of the muscles and the transmission of impulses from the nerves. If there is a deficiency, symptoms such as stumbling or rapid heartbeat can occur.
However, an overdose can be harmful. The first symptoms here are a slow heartbeat, paralysis and lethargy. Patients should have their doctor determine their potassium levels to avoid overdosing. (sb)
