Eggs are a staple of many people. In addition to the important protein, chicken eggs also contain valuable minerals such as iron and zinc and vitamins A, E and K. Eggs are booming at Easter. Children especially love them, whether it's hard-boiled colorful Easter eggs, scrambled eggs or fried eggs. However, too much of it is unhealthy.
At Easter there may be more eggs
Adults are often advised not to eat more than two eggs a day due to the supposedly unhealthy cholesterol. However, many experts have lifted such warnings about eggs and butter.
Accordingly, as a healthy person, one should not worry much about the cholesterol in these foods. And on special occasions like Easter, three eggs are fine.
However, children should eat much less of it. In a message from the dpa news agency, an expert explains how much the little ones can consume.
Up to two eggs a week
The following general recommendations apply to children: One to two eggs a week are okay between the ages of one and three years, two eggs for four to six year olds.
However, it should be noted that with this information processed eggs in pasta or pastries are already factored in.
"If children eat more at Easter, for example, this does not immediately have health effects," explains nutritionist Nadia Röwe from the Young Family network, which belongs to the Federal Center for Nutrition, in the agency report.
According to the expert, individual deviations are not that bad if the weekly average is roughly correct.
Healthy body regulates cholesterol alone
According to Röwe, parents generally don't have to worry about cholesterol levels. The body usually regulates this alone.
However, cholesterol control does not work properly in people with diabetes or a disorder in fat metabolism. Such patients - including children if necessary - should therefore be very cautious with their egg consumption.
Because an elevated cholesterol level in the blood can cause, among other things, hardening of the arteries, which in the worst case can lead to a heart attack or stroke.
Nadia Röwe addressed another reason that speaks for moderate egg consumption: "However, the egg yolk contains a relatively high amount of fat," says the nutritionist.
Organic eggs are generally recommended. Because on the one hand they are much healthier and on the other hand they contribute to the protection of animals and nature. (ad)
