Noble mushrooms: truffles grown on your own? Is that possible?

Home-grown truffles? On the way to a new special culture
(BZfE) - Truffle lovers will be happy: The culinary delicacy could soon be from local areas. Truffles are not only found in French, but also in local forests. However, collecting the species under strict protection is not permitted.

The majority of the Burgundy and Périgord truffles on the market now come from truffle plantations. Trials with truffle trees have been around since the 19th century. In Bavaria, too, there were farms in the 18th and 19th centuries that looked after truffles. There have always been attempts to start with a truffle culture, but without success. It is only since specialized tree nurseries have infected locally appropriate and ecologically adapted tree species with the spores of »indigenous« truffles that it has been possible to grow domestic truffles.

There is now an assortment of different types of truffles and trees. The creation of a truffle garden is scientifically supported and tested by the Bavarian State Institute for Viticulture and Horticulture in Veitshöchheim. The technical information from the agricultural administration in Bavaria describes the possibilities for creating a truffle garden. A prerequisite is the orientation to the conditions of the natural truffle locations.

The soil should be rich in lime with a pH value well above seven, have a good soil structure and be interspersed with smaller limestones. Waterlogging must not be allowed. Host trees are primarily hazelnut bushes in association with oak, hornbeam and hornbeam. Initial tests have shown that truffle mycorrhiza has developed well. It remains to be seen whether there will be a truffle harvest from the 5th to 7th year. So fast harvests are not guaranteed and if they do, the truffles will develop into a very demanding special crop. Renate Kessen, respectively
