Dispensing with alcohol, smartphones and the like: Fasting is becoming increasingly popular among Germans
A recent survey shows that abstaining from alcohol and sweets when fasting is again at the top. Younger Germans in particular also switch off smartphones and computers more often. The number of Germans who fast has increased significantly in recent years.
Above all, Germans want to avoid alcohol and sweets
On Ash Wednesday, the 40-day Christian Lent begins, which many non-religious people also use for the targeted omission of certain luxury goods and consumer goods. Avoiding alcohol and sweets is often at the top of the goals you set yourself. This is also shown by a current and representative Forsa survey commissioned by the health insurance company DAK-Gesundheit. According to this, 68 percent of those surveyed want to do without alcohol and 59 percent without sweets.
More and more Germans are fasting
It is generally to be welcomed when people take time for healthy fasting and detoxification. Fasting cleanses the stomach and the soul and helps to question its consumption behavior.
As DAK-Gesundheit reports in a message, more and more people in Germany are fasting. According to the survey, the number of fasting fans has increased by 15 percent since 2012 to 59 percent.
In addition to classics such as the waiver of alcohol, sweets and meat, private internet use is also becoming more and more important: Almost one in four (23 percent) wants to forego all or part of it during the fasting season. Online fasting is particularly popular among 18 to 19 year olds (26 percent).
Digital rest periods
According to the DAK study, 59 percent of Germans fasted at least once for several weeks. That is 15 percent more than five years ago. In particular, people between the ages of 30 and 44 are open to fasting.
66 percent of them say that they have fasted before. They are most likely to avoid alcohol, sweets, television or smoking.
In contrast, younger people particularly often do without the Internet and computers (26 percent). "Interestingly, the generation difference of the past year has reversed here," explained DAK expert Ralf Kremer.
“The 45plus generation in particular indicated that they also wanted to switch off. But younger people are increasingly realizing that the body needs digital phases of rest in order to stay healthy and fit. ”
Friends are more important than smartphone time
As the health insurance company reports, around two thirds of those surveyed want to reduce stress with the online waiver (68 percent) - an increase of 15 percent compared to the previous year.
In addition to reducing stress, the need to spend the free time with friends and relatives is another important reason for online fasting.
This is indicated by 64 percent in the current survey - 21 percent more than in 2016. Women and men therefore take a break from the media equally often (23 percent each).
Every third wants to do without meat
The abstinence from alcohol is in first place with 68 percent. Sweets are in second place - but with significantly less approval than in the previous year (2017: 59 percent, 2016: 66 percent).
More than every third respondent wants to do without meat (39 percent). This is followed by television and smoking, each with 34 percent.
The survey also showed some significant differences between the sexes. In the next few weeks, significantly more women than men would like to do without sweets (62 to 56 percent).
There is also a gender difference in meat (46 to 30 percent). Men, on the other hand, want to ignore alcohol more often (70 to 66 percent).
East Germans are fasting muffle
Especially in the south of Germany, many people have decided to fast this year. According to the health insurance company, Bavaria is the fasting stronghold with 66 percent. Baden-Württemberg is also above average with 61 percent.
