Dental care for those in need of care should be improved

Given the aging of society, the number of people in need of care is also increasing. Dental health in these seniors is often significantly worse than in the rest of the population. Bavaria's Minister of Health wants to improve dental care for those in need of care.

Dental health of those in need of care
Life expectancy in Germany has increased dramatically in recent years. As society ages, so does the number of people who need care. For many of them, dental health is not particularly good. For example, experts pointed out years ago that people in need of care often have tooth decay. Bavaria's health and care minister Melanie Huml has now announced that she wants to improve the dental care of those in need of care.

Dental care for the elderly
To prevent tooth decay efficiently and to avoid gingivitis and toothache, it is especially important to brush your teeth regularly.

Good oral hygiene also includes, among other things, regular and sufficient drinking. But older people in particular experience less thirst with increasing age; this leads to a dry mouth.

In addition, the flow of saliva decreases with age. This combination has a detrimental effect on oral hygiene since the saliva is responsible for the natural cleaning of the teeth and for the neutralization of harmful acids. Saliva also repairs broken tooth enamel.

Dental care is therefore particularly important for older people, especially those in need of care.

"New ways required"
“In future, the living conditions of older people, especially those in need of care, will also have to be taken into account in dental health more than before. New paths are also required here, ”said Huml on the occasion of a new study on this topic.

According to a communication from the ministry, the scientific work titled “Oral health and quality of life for people in need of care with mobility impairment in home and inpatient care” deals with outpatient dental care for people in need of care in Lower Franconia.

“The study shows, among other things, how the dental health of those in need of care can be improved with the help of home visits to the dentist. This increases the quality of life significantly. Because pain is avoided - and eating is easier with healthy teeth, ”said the Minister.

"In addition, dental care at home and their relatives means less stress," said the politician.

How the care of people in need of care can be put into practice
“One of the goals of our study was to show how care for people in need of care can be put into practice. This should be an incentive for even more dentists in Bavaria to follow this example and make more home visits, ”added Huml.

"There is also additional remuneration for those insured by law who, due to the need for long-term care, a disability or a permanent, significant reduction in their day-to-day skills, could only go to a dental practice with great effort," explained the Minister of Health.

She also referred to the needs of those in need of care in inpatient facilities: “Patients in inpatient care facilities are often no longer able to see their dentist regularly due to illness. For them, too, it is very important to check dental and jaw health. Dentists will have to react more strongly to this need in the future. ”(Ad)
