Heart attack, infections and cancer: what most Germans die from

In 2015, a total of 925 200 people died in Germany, including 449 512 men and 475 688 women. As the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) further reports, the number of deaths increased by 6.5% compared to the previous year. Almost half of the deceased women and a quarter of the deceased men were 85 years and older.

As in previous years, the most common cause of death in 2015 was cardiovascular disease. 39% of all deaths were due to this. Of the 356,625 people who died of cardiovascular disease, 157,999 were men and 198,626 were women. These diseases led to death, especially in older people. 92% of those who died from a disease of the cardiovascular system were 65 years and older. A total of 50,948 people died of a heart attack in this disease group in 2015. Of these, 57% were men and 43% women.

The second most common cause of death was cancer: almost a quarter of all those who died (226 337 people) succumbed to cancer in 2015, including 122 916 men and 103 421 women. Malignant neoplasms of the digestive and respiratory organs (lung and bronchial cancer) were the most frequently diagnosed cancers in men. Women were also most often affected by malignant new digestive organs. However, breast cancer was the most common single diagnosis of cancer in women.

4% of all deaths were due to a non-natural cause of death, such as injury or poisoning (36 503 deaths). In 12,868 cases (6,027 men and 6,841 women), a fall was the cause of death. 10 080 people ended their lives through suicide, with the proportion of men at 73% being almost three times as high as the proportion of women at 27%.
