Mast cell activity syndrome: woman is allergic to her husband's kiss

Rare illness: Kiss from husband could be life-threatening for wife
A young woman from the United States suffers from mast cell activation syndrome, a rare immune system disorder. She is allergic to almost everything, even to her husband. A kiss from him could have life-threatening consequences. All previous attempts at treatment have been unsuccessful.

When kisses become dangerous
Kissing is dangerous for some people. For example, a kiss can be fatal for babies if the kissing person suffers from a herpes virus infection. But there are other rare diseases that can lead to cuddling becoming a - sometimes life-threatening - risk. One of them is the so-called mast cell activity syndrome (MCAS). This immune system disorder means that a young American can no longer kiss her husband.

Severe immune system disease
Johanna Watkins from the state of Minnesota is no longer allowed to cuddle with her husband on the couch, kiss him or be in a room with him. Because physical proximity can be life-threatening for the 29-year-old, reports the British "BBC".

This is due to the so-called mast cell activity syndrome (MCAS), a serious disease of the immune system in which the cells mutate, which should protect them from environmental influences and external threats, and attack their bodies. The young woman is therefore allergic to almost everything and everyone - including her husband Scott Watkins.

Disease has not been adequately researched
As explained on a website of the Swiss Interest Group on Histamine Intolerance (SIGHI), mast cell activity diseases (MCAD), to which the MCAS also belongs, “have different causes and the correspondingly many manifestations. They are complex and still very incompletely researched ”.

The self-help association “Mastozytose e.V.” explains on its website: “Mast cells are among the cells that are responsible for the immune system. They contain chemical agents that they can release to perform their various tasks. Due to triggers, these substances can be released continuously or acutely. "

Condition worsened after the wedding
According to the “BBC” report, the US couple did not know at the time of their marriage in 2013 that Johanna's condition would deteriorate in this way. Even then she had to deal with unusual rashes, irritable bowel syndrome and migraines, but these complaints became much worse after the wedding.

"Three or four years ago, before we got the diagnosis, there were times when Johanna had to cough when I got close to her, and especially her addiction," explained Scott. Over the past year it has turned out that they can no longer spend their lives physically together.

"We found that when Scott came into the room, I felt worse and worse," said Johanna. "And then one day he came back from a hair salon and within two minutes my anaphylactic symptoms started and he had to leave the room."

Allergic reactions to people
According to the information, she had previously been allergic to her parents and many other people.

The only people she was not completely allergic to were her siblings. However, her condition worsened even after her visit. Although the highest precautionary measures and hygiene regulations have now been observed.

The young woman currently lives alone in a room with friends. Doors and windows are therefore locked, filters purify the air. Her husband lived three floors below her. When they watch TV together, everyone in their room does so while chatting.

According to the report, no treatment for MCAS has so far been successful. "They don't know if I'll get well, so we hope and pray that I'll get well," said Johanna. "My life could end quickly. Life is fragile - it can end ”. (ad)
