Minister of Health warns of health risks from hookahs
Oriental hookahs also play an increasing role in this country. However, the associated risks are often underestimated by consumers. The belief that the pull on the hookah is less toxic than that of a cigarette is widespread. Bavaria's Minister of Health Huml, in particular, warns young people of the health risks posed by so-called “shishas”.
smoking is dangerous for your health
According to studies, there are fewer and fewer smokers in Germany, but this is not a reason for the all-clear. Tobacco consumption favors numerous diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases and lung diseases. According to some experts, hookah smoking is particularly harmful. Bavaria's Minister of Health Melanie Huml is now again warning of the health risks from hookahs.
Stress on the heart and lungs
The CSU politician referred to the relevant findings of the State Office for Health and Food Safety (LGL). As a result, smoking coal-powered hookahs creates hazardous pollutants - even when tobacco-free smoking products are used, a ministry statement said.
The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) also recently pointed out that tobacco-free hookahs can be hazardous to health.
“Young people in particular should not underestimate the risks of hookahs. This is not a harmless pleasure. Because the high level of pollutants in the indoor air caused by smoking a hookah puts a lot of strain on the heart and lungs, ”explained Huml.
High levels of carbon monoxide
According to the LGL findings, smoking water pipes indoors produces high levels of carbon monoxide when the coal is burned.
The carbon monoxide values measured in the room air regularly exceed the guidelines given by the World Health Organization (WHO). In addition, ultrafine particles and carcinogenic substances appear in the room air.
"Especially people with lung and cardiovascular diseases and pregnant women should avoid water pipe smoke," said the minister, who is a doctor herself.
Warning of the consumption of e-shishas and e-cigarettes
Huml also warned again about the consumption of e-shishas and e-cigarettes. “E-shishas and e-cigarettes can be the first step towards nicotine addiction. In addition, these harmless products can contain harmful substances, ”said the politician.
And the health damage caused by nicotine also threatens with e-cigarettes and hookahs.
Since April 1, 2016, electronic cigarettes and so-called e-shishas can only be sold to adults in Germany. This also applies to the mail order business. Huml underlined: "E-shishas and e-cigarettes do not belong in the hands of children and adolescents!" (Ad)
