Improperly used intimate hygiene: This is the cause of cystitis

Reasons for cystitis and what helps against it
It occurs particularly often in the cold season: cystitis. Women are particularly affected. This has to do with the female anatomy. The disease can often be avoided. However, it is important to know the causes for this.

Women and girls are mostly affected
It is mostly girls and women who contract cystitis. The disease, which is often associated with urinary symptoms and fever, is triggered by bacteria that bite into the urethra and move up to the bladder. The fact that women are affected more often than men is due to an anatomical difference. The urethra of women is significantly shorter and therefore more suitable to allow penetrating germs to find their way up into the bladder.

How cystitis develops
In order to protect yourself from bladder infections, it is important to know how it can happen. Already in grandmother's day, people were warned not to sit on cold floors because they can catch cold on the bladder. And that is also the case, because cold increases the risk of infection in the pelvic area. This is also a reason why wet bathing suits and swimming trunks should be changed immediately after swimming.

Frequent intercourse as the cause
In addition, painful cystitis caused by sex is not uncommon. Frequent sexual intercourse increases the risk of inflammation, since the mucous membranes become irritated and subsequently more susceptible to infection ("honeymoon cystitis"). Experts therefore recommend going to the toilet "afterwards" in order to naturally flush out the pathogens.

No perfumed intimate hygiene
The following applies to intimate hygiene: "Less is more". This means that only pH-neutral products for the intimate area should be used that contain as little fragrance, color and preservatives as possible.

It is recommended to clean the labia only, never the vagina inside.

As water can dry out the skin on the anus, perineum, vaginal and bladder entrances and thus create the suitable soil for intestinal bacteria, sensitive skin should be cared for with fat creams such as petroleum jelly or milking fat. In this way, a barrier for conspicuous intestinal bacteria can also be built on the dam.

Wiping technique when using the toilet
Since spermicides and diaphragms also attack the vaginal flora, women who get bladder infections quickly should avoid such agents and opt for contraceptive alternatives such as condoms.

It is also important to drink a lot. Pathogens can be rinsed out with sufficient fluid. This is particularly important in the cold months, because at this time many people drink significantly less than in summer. Health experts recommend drinking at least 1.5 liters of water a day.

Another reason why bladder infections can occur is a wrong wiping technique after using the toilet. Since bacteria can penetrate the urethra in women after defecation due to incorrect cleaning, proper intimate hygiene means always wiping the butt from front to back.

Natural remedies help
However, if an illness does occur despite all precautionary measures, various home remedies for cystitis can help with a mild course. Examples include anti-inflammatory bladder teas that contain birch leaves, bearberry leaves, juniper or nettle.

In the case of extremely severe pain, flank pain or blood in the urine, a doctor should definitely decide whether an antibiotic is useful. (ad)
