Doctors examine the prerequisite for happiness and contentment
Since the beginning of humanity we have been trying to find out what makes us happy and content. Are the causes of this a good job and a lot of money or are our health and an intact harmonious relationship much more important? Researchers have now found that relationship status and mental health are key to happiness and happiness in life.
Scientists from the London School of Economics (LSE), analyzing several studies on happiness, found that a harmonious relationship leads to improved satisfaction. Happiness and satisfaction depend mainly on the relationship and mental health of the person, not on the annual income. The experts released a press release on the results of their investigation.
Researchers analyze several international surveys on happiness and misfortune
The extensive orientation study examined the results of several international surveys on the causes of happiness and misfortune. A total of 200,000 responses were included in the study. The doctors tried to understand which factors are important for happiness and satisfaction.
Study uses so-called lucky scale
For their investigation, the researchers used a luck scale with points from one to ten. The analysis of the data in the study showed that doubling the salary in humans only leads to an increase in happiness by 0.2 points, the doctors explain. People with a partner generally had a point value increased by 0.6 points on the same scale. Depression and anxiety, on the other hand, led to a decrease in happiness of 0.7 points, the scientists add.
Well-being is more important than wealth
Former British government advisor Professor Richard Layard of the London School of Economics co-authored the study and said the findings showed that the new evidence should lead to a rethinking of the state. It is not the creation of wealth that is important for general happiness and satisfaction, but it is much more important to create a feeling of well-being, the expert explains. Combating depression and anxiety is much more effective than combating poverty.
Factors that affect our well-being:
In the past, states have mostly dealt with poverty, unemployment, education and physical health little by little. However, there are other important factors for individual satisfaction and happiness. Nowadays, aspects such as experiencing domestic violence, alcoholism, depression and anxiety are at least as important, say the doctors. For young people, progressive alienation and fear of exams are also crucial for happiness and satisfaction. Of course, there are many other reasons for the happiness or unhappiness of individuals, the researchers emphasize.
Results identified discussed at conference on well-being
The results of the study evaluation will be discussed at a major conference on wellbeing at the London School of Economics on December 12th and 13th. The event is being organized in cooperation with the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and other leading institutions. (as)
