Diabtes: How to protect yourself from diabetes

Healthy eating and exercise: How to protect yourself from diabetes
According to health experts, the number of diabetes patients is increasing massively. Many have not known about their illness for a long time. Because diabetes is popularly known as diabetes, many people think that if you eat too much sugar, you get the disease. However, there are several risk factors and therefore different ways to protect yourself from the metabolic disease.

1,000 new cases every day
According to the German Diabetes Aid, 6.7 million people in Germany are affected by diabetes. 1,000 new cases are added every day. Because many people initially do not know anything about their illness, diabetes is often treated late. The world diabetes day on November 14th is this year under the motto "Keep an eye on diabetes" and particularly targets type 2 diabetes and its early detection.

Major risk factors for diabetes
Early detection of the disease makes it easier to prevent complications from diabetes. On the occasion of the global campaign day, health experts also point out that metabolic disease can be successfully prevented in many cases. To do this, it is important to know the main risk factors for diabetes: overweight, unhealthy diet and lack of exercise.

Protect against diabetes
To protect yourself against diabetes, the risk factors mentioned above should be switched off or minimized. Even after the diagnosis, those affected are usually recommended to change their lifestyle. At the top of the tips for everyday life with diabetes are a healthy diet with a high percentage of whole grains and sufficient exercise. The latter is particularly important for affected children. It is extremely important to reduce existing excess weight.

But losing weight is difficult for many overweight people. Even if a few kilos have been lost, they are quickly back on your hips: the so-called "yo-yo effect". In a message from the German Diabetes Aid, nutritionist Nicole Jäger explains what can be the reason and how to break this vicious circle.

Obesity is a symptom
She almost halved from 340 to just under 170 kilograms. "I am living proof that nobody with eating problems has to give up," said the Hamburg-based nutritionist.

According to Jäger, it is a typical prejudice to assume that people who are overweight are lazy and undisciplined. "Obesity is not a disease and has nothing to do with" displeasure ". Obesity is a symptom. People who eat often compensate for other problems in their lives. ”

Conscious engagement with nutrition, body and psyche
Since diets often only cause obesity to increase due to the yo-yo effect, experts often warn against incorrect weight loss. In order to lose weight without a yo-yo effect, the diet must be consistently changed over the long term - and one should not expect too rapid success.

If the diets do nothing, there is frustration and despair. Overweight people sometimes withdraw from shame and avoid social contacts. "In addition, being overweight makes you immobile, limp and sick," said Nicole Jäger.

According to her statement, a change can only be successful through a conscious analysis of nutrition, body and psyche: What is not going well in life? What is the food for? How can you fill this gap differently?

Difference between hunger and appetite
In her nutritional counseling, Nicole Jäger analyzes the anatomy and psychology behind her own behavior and works out a step-by-step change with them.

It is also about consciously perceiving the difference between hunger and appetite, for example. "If I can lose weight successfully, everyone can!" Says Jäger, who will give her lecture "Die Fettlöserin" at the central event for World Diabetes Day in Berlin. (ad)
