While hummus was known to most Germans only by visiting an oriental restaurant or snack bar, the delicious cream can now be found in many supermarkets. The paste, which mainly consists of healthy chickpeas, can also be easily made by yourself.

Oriental hummus is also becoming increasingly popular in Germany. In the past, the delicious cream was only available in Turkish or Arabic grocery stores, but it is now also available in many supermarkets. The paste is known primarily as an accompaniment to falafel and Co. However, some also use it as a snack or dip for vegetable sticks. The cream is not only very tasty, but also healthy.

Chickpea paste contains important minerals
“Hummus provides many important minerals like magnesium, zinc and iron. It also contains folic acid, vitamins B1 and B2 and is rich in fiber, ”reports the Consumer Center Bavaria in a current message.

It's no wonder, after all, the cream consists mainly of chickpeas. These mineral bombs belong to the healthy legumes, which besides lentils, beans and peas "are an important source of vegetable protein and amino acids for people all over the world", wrote UN experts for the "Year of the Legumes" 2016.

Make hummus yourself
Although there are various types of ready-made hummus available for purchase, you can also make them yourself. "The basis for hummus is cooked chickpeas, which are mashed and mixed with a paste of roasted and ground sesame seeds," explained Susanne Moritz, nutrition expert at the Bavarian Consumer Center.

The typical ingredients are olive oil, lemon juice and cloves of garlic, as well as salt, pepper, paprika powder and cumin. However, pine nuts, chilli oil or coriander also fit well in the paste.

In oriental cuisine, hummus is traditionally eaten as a starter or side dish with salad and flatbread. The spicy chickpea puree generally fits very well in vegan and vegetarian diets.

The cream is also suitable for new variations. For example, you can try hummus on an oriental matjes plate. (ad)
