Meta-analysis: oatmeal lowers unfavorable blood lipids

A new meta-analysis from Canada shows that oat products are good for heart health. It has long been known that eating oat products can lower cholesterol, according to Canadian researchers. So far, however, the studies have mainly focused on LDL cholesterol.

Now, in a meta-analysis of 58 clinical studies involving almost 4,000 participants, the scientists were able to demonstrate that oats have an impact on two other cholesterol values: HDL cholesterol and apolipoprotein B (apoB). Oats contain the fiber beta-glucan, which is believed to be responsible for the positive effects. With a diet enriched with about 3.5 grams of beta-glucan from oats per day, the scientists saw a slight improvement in the three cholesterol levels. However, it is difficult to cover the recommended amount of beta-glucan only by eating oatmeal. To solve this problem, one could also eat more oat bran. A cup of cooked oat bran contains the same amount of beta-glucan at 88 calories as double the amount of oat flakes at 166 calories. (pm)
