You don't necessarily have to take medication to lower blood pressure. Often a healthier lifestyle and home remedies for high blood pressure also help.

Many feel nothing of their high blood pressure
According to the German Hypertension League (DHL), around 20 to 30 million people in Germany suffer from high blood pressure (hypertension). The tricky thing is: high blood pressure is not felt by patients for a long time and often only becomes noticeable when it has caused organ damage. He is therefore - like other diseases - referred to as a "silent killer". On the occasion of the nationwide Heart Week of the German Heart Foundation, health experts provide information on the most important risk diseases for cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack, stroke, heart failure and cardiac arrhythmias (atrial fibrillation) under the motto "Heart under stress".

High blood pressure damages the vessels
In addition to high blood pressure, this also includes diabetes, high cholesterol and stress.

"In order for our heart to pump 7,000 liters of blood through our vascular system every day to supply organs and muscles with oxygen and nutrients, we have to protect the heart and vessels from the vascular-damaging effects of high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, high cholesterol levels and stress," warned the heart specialist Prof. Dr. med. Thomas Meinertz, CEO of the German Heart Foundation in a message.

Every third German suffers from high blood pressure
As for the other "silent killers", the following applies to high blood pressure: better diagnose and treat early. Although almost every third German citizen is affected, many have no idea of ​​their high blood pressure. Some people think that high blood pressure is an “age-related illness”. But this assumption is wrong.

Older people in particular fall ill, but younger people are also increasingly affected. Young men in particular often do not know that their blood pressure levels are too high and are less likely to be treated. Untreated hypertension is one of the greatest health risks in the western world. It is the number one risk factor for cardiovascular diseases.

Lower blood pressure naturally
Often, those affected are quickly advised to lower blood pressure, but in many cases hypertension can be treated without medication. In addition to regular exercise, a healthy, varied diet with little fat, sugar and salt should be mentioned here.

Also of interest are test results that were recently presented at a conference of the American Heart Association (AHA). Accordingly, natural yogurt relieves hypertension in women. Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, overweight or obesity should also be avoided. In addition, relaxation exercises to relieve stress, such as yoga or autogenic training, can be very effective and positively influence high blood pressure values. Some home remedies such as Kneipp applications can offer good support.

Medicines do not work in some patients
But for some patients, neither natural measures nor medicines help. "Around half of all hypertension patients, despite drug therapy, cannot lower their blood pressure sufficiently," the University Hospital Freiburg reported in a recent press release. The permanently stressed body reacts to this with other diseases. According to their own statements, the university is researching a new technology that can help such patients. (ad)
