With mustaches against prostate and testicular cancer

Cancer prevention: Men grow a mustache in November
In November, the number of men walking around with a mustache could increase significantly. The "Movember Foundation" is calling on men to grow a mustache for a month and collect money to fund research and projects on men's health.

Let the mustache grow for a month
If you see a man with a mustache in November, he may be taking part in a current disease prevention campaign. The so-called "Movember Foundation" calls on men worldwide to grow a mustache for 30 days and collect donations for men's health.

Action for men's health
“Men face a health crisis that is not talked about. They die too young before their time. We are doing something about it and need your help, ”says the organization's German website. "Let this Movember grow your mustache for men's health." And: "Collect donations for men's health."

The term "Movember" is composed of the English word for mustache, ("Mustache") and "November".

Some of the biggest male health problems
According to its own statements, the foundation is devoted to some of the greatest health problems for men: prostate and testicular cancer, poor mental health and suicide prevention.

Current figures also show how important this is. Scientists from the University of Chicago, for example, reported that testicular cancer has risen steadily in Europe and the United States in recent years.

And: "Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men worldwide and the number of cases is expected to increase to 1.7 million by 2030, almost doubling it," reports the foundation.

Men are a precautionary muffle
The fundamental problem is that men often neglect their health. Many do not know which checkups are important for men, or are even afraid of the doctor or the possibly bad diagnoses.

On average worldwide, men die about six years earlier than women. According to the "Movember Foundation", inequality in the health of men and women receives "little regional, national and global attention and is neglected by health care providers and those who do health policy."

Successful research
However, the foundation knows "how men tick and how to find and fund the most innovative research projects". According to her own information, more than 1,200 men's health projects have been financed worldwide in 13 years.

Especially in prostate cancer, research has made tremendous progress in recent years. For example, British researchers have found that certain genes play a major role in the development of prostate cancer. A few months ago, other scientists reported a new drug that would better treat aggressive prostate cancer. (ad)
