In other parts of the world, coconut oil has been used in the kitchen for thousands of years. In Germany, it has only moved in in recent years. Proponents like to emphasize the health benefits of the oil, but experts have not proven it scientifically.

Which is the right oil?
Products that are particularly fatty are generally associated with the development of overweight and obesity (obesity), but the body is fundamentally dependent on the intake of fats. The selection plays an important role here. Opinions regarding which oil is the right one differ widely, especially when using cooking oil. In recent years, coconut oil has also entered the local kitchen. But is it actually as healthy as is often assumed?

A new "superfood"
A few years ago, coconut oil was almost unknown in German cuisine, but it can now also be found as a new "superfood" in the local supermarkets and drugstores. It should be ideal for roasting and cooking and also serve health.

According to its proponents, coconut oil helps prevent cardiovascular diseases and even cancer. It also helps against bacteria and fungi. But what's really wrong with the claims about the trend food?

Coconut oil for dry hair and for the skin
Coconut oil has been used as a cosmetic for a long time. It is a popular home remedy for dry hair and relieves sunburn. However, scientific evidence has so far been lacking for its supposedly diverse health-promoting effects even as food.

Since the white fat is also no healthier than other oils, there is no health reason to consume coconut oil in large quantities, according to the magazine "Nutritional Review" (October 2016 edition). The magazine refers to a report by the scientists Dr. Stacey Lockyer and Sara Stanner from the British Nutrition Foundation.

A lot of saturated fatty acids
The coconut oil contains around 92 percent saturated fatty acids, which, according to experts, adversely affect fat metabolism and thus increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

In addition, coconut oil contains a high percentage of lauric, myristic and palmitic acid, for which an effect that increases LDL cholesterol has been demonstrated.

Delicious ingredient for exotic dishes
As it says in the "Nutritional Review", there is hardly any scientifically valid evidence for the propagated health effects of coconut oil. In contrast, this is certainly the case with olive and rapeseed oil. These oils have been certified in various studies to have health-promoting effects - when consumed in moderation.

But you don't have to do without coconut oil. As an ingredient in exotic dishes such as curries, like coconut milk, it can contribute to a pleasantly fresh, sweet taste and enrich the kitchen. (ad)
