Health experts recommend eating five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. This also applies to children. However, their needs differ from adults. Simple tricks can help you find the right portions.
Portion depends on the size of the child's hand
Unfortunately, studies repeatedly show that children are often fed on an unhealthy diet. Infants in particular often consume too many calories and proteins. However, it is advisable to eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables. It is important here: the right measure is crucial. "The size of the portions depends on the hand size of the children," wrote the Consumer Advice Center North Rhine-Westphalia on their website. And the consumer information service aid explains: “The hand is always there when it comes to food. It is individual, grows with it and therefore takes into account the different needs of a person depending on their age and gender. ”Small children who need less food have smaller hands.
Five servings of fruits and vegetables a day
According to consumer advocates from NRW, it is advisable to consume at least three servings of vegetables and two servings of fruit a day to meet the needs of all vitamins and minerals. A child's serving is about a small, palm-filling apple. For berries, chopped fruit or vegetables, peas and lettuce, one serving corresponds to the amount that fits in two children's hands shaped into a bowl. With a slice of bread, the palm of your hand is used as a standard. Flakes, rice and pasta should no longer land on the plate, as would fit in two hands. The following applies to milk and milk products: a glass or a mug of yoghurt or curd corresponds to one serving. Since these also contain fat, "it is a good decision to reach for the low-fat products with 1.5 percent fat on the refrigerated shelf," write the experts at the consumer protection center. (ad)
