Evaluation: Parents are sick less often than non-parents


Mothers and fathers over 40 have fewer days off than their childless colleagues

More than two days difference between working with and without children

Accordingly, the employees insured at TK were on sick leave for an average of 15.4 days last year. Mothers and fathers with family-insured children were missing a day less at 14.3 days, while those without children were one day above the average at 16.5 days, according to the TK report.

Family has a positive effect on health
For the report, the health insurance company evaluated the sick leave and pharmaceutical data of its 4.6 million insured employees. The main focus this year was on the so-called “sandwich generation” between 30 and 44 years. “With this generation we often speak of the double burden of family and work. For many employees, it is even a triple burden if they also look after their parents. That is why I think it is good and important to show that family is also a resource that has a positive impact on health, ”said TK CEO Dr. Jens Baas, according to the message. Accordingly, compatibility deserves greater importance in the health management of companies and health insurance companies. "As we can see now, this is not only cosmetic for the employer image, but also entrepreneurially smart," says Dr. Baas continues.

Difference increases with age
It is striking, however, that this trend can only be seen from the age of 40, explains Dr. Thomas Grobe from the AQUA Institute, who evaluated the data for the health insurance company. Because in the younger age groups, the absenteeism of parents would be even higher. Only “from the age of 40 onwards the relationship turns around and they are less unable to work”. The "scissors" then diverge with increasing age, so that the difference for over 55-year-olds is even over a week, the expert continues.

Parents get fewer psychiatric drugs
Age, however, does not matter when prescribing medication. Rather, the report shows that working mothers and fathers with family-insured children, across all age groups, were prescribed fewer psychiatric drugs in 2015 than employees without children. Here the difference in TC was three daily doses for men and almost seven for women.

According to the TK, the results of earlier studies by the health insurance fund confirm that children and family seem to offer a good balance. "We know from our population-representative surveys that family and friends are always mentioned first when we ask about anti-stress strategies," said Dr. Sabine Voermans, head of telecommunications prevention, according to the announcement.
