Most people today have a lot of stress in their professional lives. This pressure at work can even have a negative impact on our health. But what if employees are hardly challenged in their job? Researchers have now found that if we do the same routine tasks, brain performance will decrease.

Can it have negative consequences for us if we are underwhelmed in our work and always do the same recurring tasks? Scientists have now found that our brain breaks down mentally when it is hardly required at work. The situation is similar when we have to spend a long time in the hospital. However, there are some practical exercises to counteract this degradation, reports the news agency “dpa” on the study results.

Routine is the enemy of intellectual development
The researchers found in their investigation that, for example, 25-year-old auxiliary workers who had already learned everything important in their profession break down very quickly, explains researcher Siegfried Lehrl, President of the Society for Brain Training. Other studies had previously dealt with this topic. One of the examinations, for example, observed patients in hospitals. These people also found that their intelligence declined sharply. The subjects' intelligence quotient (IQ) dropped by five points after just one week. The situation worsened when the hospital stay lasted longer. If the patients were in the hospital for a period of three weeks, the IQ even dropped by twenty points, writes the dpa. Routine is an enemy of intellectual development, says Lehrl.

First exercise against mental degradation:
However, it is possible to counteract the degradation with the simplest exercises. Workers can literally train their brains. At best, people have to do something for their minds every day. Such exercises should be part of the normal daily routine, such as getting up in the morning or eating something. One possible exercise would be, for example: We look for a report from the newspaper every morning, in which we circle the words with certain groups of letters. For example, we could circle all words that contain an “au”. So that there are no repetitions of content, we should always choose different articles. The groups of letters should also vary. Ten minutes of practice are enough, after that our brain is fully capable, explains Lehrl in the dpa announcement.

Second exercise against mental degradation:
Another exercise would be to think of simple words and then turn them around in our head. These words should initially consist of no more than five letters, reports the dpa. In this exercise, for example, the word “light” becomes the word “thcil”. Through the process, it is possible to train our brain's memory. This is the most important size for us. If we do such exercises regularly, we can process information faster. In addition, our so-called memory range increases. This means the number of details that we can keep in our head at the same time, reports the dpa.

When moving, people can think faster
But not only our brain needs to be trained, the physical side also plays an important role in our mental fitness, explains Lehrl to the news agency. Under no circumstances should you consume too much sugar or fat and also make sure you exercise enough. Get off one station earlier on the way to work, then walk the rest of the way at a brisk pace. Go up the stairs more often instead of waiting for the elevator. Grab your bike and go on a long bike ride.
