How does a healthy diet affect depression?

Today, more and more people in our society suffer from depression. Medications are often taken to reduce these depressions. Researchers have now found that eating the right amount of vegetables, fruits and whole grains can reduce depression.

Medical researchers at the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago found that consuming vegetables, fruits, and whole grains could reduce depression. The results of the study will be presented at the American Academy of Neurology's 70th Annual Meeting in Los Angeles from April 21-27, 2018.

What is the DASH diet?

In their research, the researchers found that people whose diets were more in line with dietary approaches to end hypertension (high blood pressure) were less likely to develop depression compared to people who eat differently. In addition to fruits and vegetables, this so-called DASH diet recommends fat-free or low-fat dairy products and some foods that are rich in saturated fats and sugar. Other studies had previously found health benefits from this type of diet, such as lowering high blood pressure and bad cholesterol (LDL), and helping you lose weight and lose weight.

964 subjects took part in the study

A total of 964 participants with an average age of 81 years were observed for an average of six and a half years for the study. The subjects were monitored for symptoms of depression during this period. They also filled out questionnaires about how often they consumed different foods, and the researchers examined how closely the participants' food intake adhered to special forms of nutrition such as the DASH diet, the Mediterranean diet or traditional Western diet.

DASH diet reduced the likelihood of depression

The participants were divided into three groups depending on how closely they followed the diet. People in the two groups who underwent the DASH diet developed depression less often than the other subjects. The DASH group was 11 percent less likely to experience depression over time than the worst-performing participants. It was also observed that people who ate a traditional western diet (rich in saturated fats and red meat and little fruit and vegetables) were at an increased risk of developing depression.

More studies are needed

The study does not prove that the DASH diet leads to a reduced risk of depression, it only shows an association, says Dr. Cherian. "Future studies are now needed to confirm these results and determine the best nutritional components of the DASH diet that will prevent depression later in life and best help people keep their brains healthy," added the expert.
