Strawberries, botanically called Fragaria, are perennial herbaceous plants that produce the well-known and popular collective fruit, which are also known as strawberries. Strawberries have played a role in human nutrition since the Stone Age and have been grown extensively since the Middle Ages. Most strawberries that are cultivated today came from a cross between the scarlet strawberry (Fragaria virginiana) and the Chile strawberry (Fragaria chiloensis). This cross gave birth to the archetype of today's garden strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa).
Strawberries are particularly popular for their sweet taste, but they also contain many healthy ingredients such as vitamin C, folic acid and numerous minerals (e.g. potassium and magnesium). With 32 calories per 100 grams, strawberries are also welcome in many diets. Scientists also found that an extract from strawberries can apparently protect against breast cancer. However, the quality of strawberries fluctuates out of season. There have also been frequent reports of germ contamination in strawberries, for example when they are stored in the pressure points.
