Avoid “avocado hands”: department store now sells avocado without stone

No more injuries when cutting: thanks to the avocado without stone

Avocados are considered to be extremely healthy, but many people are injured when the fruit is cut and pitted. The "cocktail avocado" could be the solution. This is now being offered in a British department store. It is a fruit that does not contain a stone.

The avocado is an all-rounder

A few years ago, many Germans only knew avocados from vacation. But now the delicious fruit can be found in almost all supermarkets. In Germany it is mostly used as a dip, for example in the form of guacamole or as a bread topping. But healthy superfood can do much more: Avocados are suitable for salads and soups, they can be baked in the oven and serve as the basis for tempting desserts and delicious drinks. The fruits are very healthy, but many people are injured when they are cut and pitted. There is now a solution to this problem: the avocado without a core.

Delicious and healthy fruits

Avocados are often seen as extremely fat calorie bombs, which is why many avoid the delicious fruits. But the unsaturated fatty acids it contains, which the body cannot manufacture itself, can even help you lose weight.

According to experts, the enzyme lipase plays a role in this, which controls fat burning during digestion and in the adipose tissue.

The fruits also contain minerals such as magnesium, potassium and iron as well as vitamins B, E and K and provitamin A.

According to scientific research, avocados can help lower cholesterol and are good for blood formation.

In addition, thanks to the potassium they contain, they are an important contribution to a healthy heart.

Wash avocados before preparing

Before preparing the fruits, they should always be cleaned with cold or lukewarm water and scrubbed lightly.

Bacteria and pesticides frolic on the chunky skin of the fruit, which can get into the flesh with a knife when sliced open.

But there is still another health risk: Cutting and coring would "injure more and more people," as Vice President of the British Society for Hand Surgery, Simon Eccles, told The Times.

Such injuries are referred to internally as "avocado hand".

The doctor argued for "clear warnings" to reduce the injuries.

Reduce risk of injury

The British department store Marks & Spencer (M & S) now has another idea to rule out the risk of such injuries.

The company is currently selling the "cocktail avocado", a stone-free fruit that can be eaten entirely because even the smooth skin is edible.

The five to eight centimeters long fruit has an elongated shape and looks similar to a zucchini. It is grown in Spain and is only available in December.

According to M & S, the stone-free avocados are usually only sold to top Parisian restaurants. However, the British department store has now managed to organize a limited offer.

"This amazing fruit has been on our radar for a few years now and we are very happy to finally have some that our customers can try out," M&S Charlotte Curtis told The Guardian daily.

Superfood with poor ecological balance

According to the newspaper report, seedless avocado is the latest attempt to meet growing global demand for fruit. This boom is also accompanied by clear environmental disadvantages, because the fruits need a lot of water.

As researchers from the University of Twente in Enschede in the Netherlands calculated in a scientific paper, almost 2,000 liters of water are required to produce one kilogram of avocados.

In growing countries where drinking water is scarce, production can have drastic consequences.

Environmentalists also criticize that avocados travel long distances before they land in our supermarket. For this reason, the German Vegetarian Association (VEBU) advises, for example, to pay attention to organic quality and origin when shopping. (ad)
