Only two products cannot convince
In addition to thorough brushing, good toothpaste is also important for proper dental care. This is intended to remove deposits and dirt, provide white teeth and, above all, protect against tooth decay. But do the commercially available products even meet these requirements? Stiftung Warentest examined 28 toothpastes and came to an overall positive result: Almost all test products offer reliable protection against caries and at least every second removes stains at least well. However, the experts were not able to convince two pastes at all and received a “poor” rating.
Tester examined 28 toothpastes
Toothpaste is, of course, part of everyday cleaning for most people. According to the Stiftung Warentest, every German uses around five tubes a year to clean their teeth, keep them white and protect them from caries. The foundation's experts have now checked 28 toothpastes and looked closely at the extent to which the products fulfill these tasks. For this purpose, they examined the ingredients, checked how well the pastes remove deposits and whether the cream can be pressed completely out of the tube. The result is gratifying, because 22 of the products received a “good” or “very good”.
Abrasion is an important purchase criterion
An important point for the evaluation was the abrasion strength. Because the paste should not only remove deposits, but also unsightly discolouration from coffee, tea, red wine or tobacco. For this purpose, surfactants and so-called cleaning agents are contained in the cream, which cause a different degree of abrasion depending on the size, shape and type.
A strong abrasion is usually not a problem for healthy teeth, but with exposed tooth necks it is better to use a sensitive toothpaste, as recommended by the Stiftung Warentest.
Caries protection is the focus
The most important task of a toothpaste is to protect the teeth from tooth decay. This damage to tooth enamel, also known as “tooth decay”, is caused by bacterial plaque. The plaque bacteria break down sugar from our food, producing acids that attack and damage the tooth enamel. Tooth decay can be prevented with fluoride-containing toothpaste, because fluoride helps to remineralize the tooth surfaces and makes them more resistant to acids.
Tester calls for reference to zinc
Zinc is also useful for adults, according to the foundation, in commercial concentration in toothpaste. Because it is scientifically proven that the trace element has an antibacterial effect and thus protects against plaque, tartar, gingivitis and bad breath.
However, too much of this could have negative effects in the long run, the experts emphasize. These include a weakened immune system, anemia and nervous movement disorders. Since the risk of overdosing in children and adolescents is increased, the foundation requests that the packaging of zinc-containing toothpastes be labeled accordingly.
Four very good pastes
The test winner for pastes for sensitive teeth is the product “Odol-med 3 Extreme Clean deep cleaning” (2.63 per 100 ml, average price 1.97 euros), which managed to achieve “very good” dark discoloration despite low abrasion remove. Also the toothpastes “Colgate Total Fresh Stripe” (2.65 euros per 100 ml, average price 1.99 euros), “Signal Herbal Freshness” (0.87 euros per 100 ml, average price 65 cents) and “Blend-a- med Complete Protect Expert ”(€ 3.99 per 100 ml, average price € 2.99) received a very good overall rating. However, due to medium or high abrasion, these are more suitable for people with insensitive teeth.
Bottom lights do not provide adequate protection against caries
18 other products received the overall grade “good”. With them, the testers were all able to demonstrate very good protection against caries and good to satisfactory results in the removal of stains.
The losers in the investigation were the “Weleda Plant Tooth Gel” (5.67 euros per 100 ml, average price 4.25 euros) with low abrasion and the toothpaste “Biorepair” (6.67 euros per 100 ml, average price 5 euros) medium abrasion. Both products contain no fluoride, which may limit the protection against caries. At “Biorepair” there was also no information on the packaging about the zinc contained.
Brush for at least two minutes
In order to properly care for the teeth, the Stiftung Warentest recommends brushing thoroughly twice a day. A toothpaste with very good caries prophylaxis should be used, whereby at least two minutes must be brushed so that the fluoride can work sufficiently. The right cleaning technique is important: All tooth surfaces, i.e. the front, back and occlusal surfaces, must be cleaned.
The interdental spaces should also be cleaned once a day with dental floss or an interdental brush. Avoid pressing too hard with the toothbrush. If you eat acidic foods such as Have eaten fruit, it is best to wait 30 minutes before brushing, so as not to rub the acid even deeper into your teeth. (No)
