Blackheads and pimples still in adulthood: Better not express yourself!

Acne in adults: what are the causes?
Acne is most common during puberty. But beyond the age of 30, adults can suffer from pimples and blackheads. Women are particularly affected. The reasons for pimples in adulthood are different: unhealthy eating, stress at work or private life or even hormonal dispositions and changes. If simple home remedies for acne do not help, a doctor should be consulted. Arbitrary expressions should, however, be avoided. Inflammation can occur.

Impure skin from 30

Pimples and blackheads are common among adolescents during puberty. If you are still suffering from blemished skin at 30, it does not seem normal for many. But the problem is not that rare: acne in adults is relatively common. Women are particularly affected. Triggers can include stress or poor nutrition. As Prof. Philipp Babilas from the Regensburg Skin Center told the dpa news agency, the sebum glands, which are increasingly active, are the linchpin of adult acne. Even after puberty, it can still happen that sebum glands become clogged and blackheads form. According to Babilas, this is partly due to the fact that some people simply have a genetic predisposition to it.

Adult acne can have a variety of causes

Another cause, especially in women, is the hormones. As Babilas, a member of the Professional Association of German Dermatologists, explained, an imbalance of the sex hormones - in women too high a level of the male sex hormones - can cause the pores to clog more quickly. After hormonal changes, such as discontinuing the pill or giving birth, women often discover that this also changes their skin.

In addition to genetic predisposition and the world of hormones, nutrition also plays a role. Barbara Fehrenbach from the Federal Association of German Beauticians (BDK) told dpa that it had been found that foods with a high glycemic index had an impact on the skin. If the blood sugar level goes up, it also affects the sebum gland production.

In this context, the expert recommends being moderate in foods with plenty of sugar and carbohydrates. In addition, one should reduce saturated fatty acids as much as possible. According to Babilas, dairy products can also increase the complexion of the skin because the proteins in it promote inflammation. Animal proteins should therefore only be consumed in moderation. Vegetable proteins are not a problem. Emel Bütün from the Hamburg Vocational School for Cosmetics (HBK) added that it is also good to drink a lot of water. Home remedies for pimples such as tea tree oil or apple cider vinegar can also help.

Proper skin care

The psyche is also important. "Our skin is our mirror," said Bütün. It is noticeable in the complexion how we are doing internally - mentally and organically. Adults usually do more than adolescents when they have pimples and blackheads. Then quickly scratches in the face. This can have consequences: "The hand and the nails are never clinically clean," explained Fehrenbach. The acne bacteria are smeared and scattered by pressing and scratching. Babilas added: "For many, that would not have to look as bad as it looks then." Last but not least, poor skin care can also have an impact.

Products with mineral oil should be avoided better. Nothing can get in or out through such agents: "The skin is dense." Some agents, especially for acne, do not necessarily work as desired, but are very aggressive and dry out the skin: This is counterproductive, because then the skin has too little sebum and produces even more, says Fehrenbach. The expert recommends light creams and mild washing gels with as few chemical additives as possible. In addition, you should clean the facial skin twice a day, other experts advise.

Therapy can last up to a year

The range of possible causes is wide. To find out why it is because you still have pimples at 30, the experts advise you to tackle the problem together with a dermatologist. "This is a program that is being processed," said Babilas. The dermatologist also works with a gynecological expert to clarify what the hormone level looks like. "Especially with women, it is often the case that you have something from everything," says the doctor. “The overall program has dramatic improvements.” A beautician is also involved.

Impure skin can be treated with fruit acid peels, for example. According to Bütün, the top skin cells are removed. The skin is also gently cleaned. According to Babilas, such therapy sometimes takes up to a year. “The aim is to stabilize the complexion.” However, even after an improvement, those affected must continue to pay attention to eating healthy, avoiding stress and scratching and taking proper care of themselves. Further cosmetic treatments are then also possible for the aftertreatment. Masks from healing earth can also be used. (ad)
