Health: One doctor a day keeps the family doctor away

The apple is in season: a healthy powerhouse
"An apple a day keeps the doctor away. One apple a day keeps the doctor away." There is a lot to this saying. Because there are actually many healthy ingredients in an apple that keep your body and mind fit. The natural energy source is packaged in a valuable bowl to take with you. Most secondary phytonutrients and vitamins such as provitamin A, B vitamins and vitamin E are located directly in and under the shell.

When it comes to vitamin C, it depends on the variety: the green Granny Smith and the Gala variety have little vitamin C, while Braeburn and Berlepsch can almost compete with oranges. The fruit can also score with minerals such as potassium and calcium and easily digestible carbohydrates. The fiber pectin keeps the intestines going. Overall, the ingredients make the apple an ideal snack for school and office - at just 65 kcal for a medium-sized fruit (about 100 g).

For some people, however, apple consumption is clouded because they are allergic to certain proteins in and under the skin. However, many sufferers can tolerate apples with high polyphenol contents. This is probably because these phytochemicals inactivate the apple allergen. Well-tolerated varieties include, for example, Alkmene, Berlepsch, Boskoop and Santana. Cooked and processed apples, such as mush, compote, baked apple or in cake, are not a problem for most allergy sufferers anyway. Simply grating the fresh fruit can also help, since oxidative processes break down the incompatible proteins.
The apple (Malus domestica) belongs to the botanical family of the rose family and is native to the mountainous regions of western China.

It is the main fruit start in temperate climates. After Poland, Italy and France, Germany is the fourth largest producer in the EU. The main growing areas are in Baden-Württemberg, Lower Saxony, Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia. The five most popular varieties on the German market are Elstar, Braeburn, the Jonagold Group, the Gala Group and Cripps Pink (Pink Lady ®).

If you want to enjoy apple more, take a closer look when shopping. The fruit should be fresh and ripe, well colored and not damaged. The fruit can also be stored for a long time in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator or in the cool cellar. Since apples release the ripening hormone ethylene and thereby promote the ripening or aging of other fruits and vegetables, they should be kept separately if possible.
